Actor Sir Anthony Hopkins has received his second Academy Award for his role in The Father. The win comes as a bit of a surprise, as the late Chadwick Boseman was the favourite for the Best Actor Award.
However, Hopkins fans were convinced he would win, as he had already snapped up the BAFTA award for his role in the drama. The veteran actor’s first Oscar came in 1991 for his portrayal of Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs.
The Father was a hit at the Oscars, clinching awards for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Production Design. The film also cleaned up at the BAFTAs, winning the Best British Film, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress awards, to name only a few.
The Father is both psychological thriller and drama as Hopkins’ character tries to navigate his world after being diagnosed with dementia. He no longer remembers the people around him, nor does he understand what is happening to him. Hopkins provides a stellar performance, which is nuanced by Olivia Colman’s portrayal of his daughter.

Hopkins’ character becomes increasingly paranoid as he loses his grip on reality, and his condition worsens. The film is marked with gripping scenes in which Hopkins lashes out at those around him and his perceived helplessness.
Reviews of the movie have been favourable, with it clocking a 98% review rate on Rotten Tomatoes. High drama, suspense and masterful performances are only some of the reasons this movie is not only a riveting watch, but also deserves its numerous accolades.
